Ever since I started working with Scrum teams I understood that customers want standard Gannt diagrams and documentation but also want to get results quickly and have teams use agile methodology. These expectations are not realistic.

Before you implement Scrum make sure the client understands the rules and expectations of this agile methodology.

It is very important that product owners take a course and knows the rules of the game.

Agile Scrum is often compared to a rugby team. Agile methodology concentrates on blocking requirements in iterations of 1-4 weeks each, usually called sprints. At the end of every iteration a customer gets a functioning feature, usually a set of functioning features. The customer doesn’t have to give all the requirements right away and have all details configured. Based on the priorities set by a product owner the team of developers works on features that bring the most business value to the customer.

If Waterfall methodology expects a client to participate at the beginning and only at the end of the project, Scrum requires a dedicated representative of customers and stakeholders in a face of  a product owner. This close relationship between a customer and a developing team improves the product, brings transparency and keeps customers satisfied.

While Waterfall is mostly used in construction and more standard projects, Agile Scrum is often used for IT development of an absolutely new product and requires more creativity. Based of the field of business it is easier to choose the correct methodology.
